Lea x Ravensbourne

Ravensbourne Lea

Brandywine Ravensbourne (Agouti Essex: A/a D/- Hro/H M/m Rb/-)
x
Brandywine Lea (Russian Blue: a/a D/- M/m rb/rb)

Mated: 23rd July 2010
Born: 15th August 2010

This litter was planned for September, but has now been brought forward a month so the age of the kittens will match those of kittens I hope to bring in. The less noble reason is that I was very upset by their grandad/great grandad Sherbourne's death, and this has given me something to look forward to.

Lea is a lovely doe from my December 2009 litter. She is Russian Blue, and may or may not carry British Blue and Mink.

Ravensbourne is a lovely steady buck from my third litter, who reminds me very strongly of his father Sherbourne. He carries Russian Blue, British Blue and Mink.

This is an inbreed litter with Lea mated to her uncle, to help continue their lovely temperament while giving me a good base to select from.

Expected Varieties: Mating Rafe to Lea should give me unmarked and Essex marked on Russian Blue, Russian Blue Agouti, Black and Agouti, and also the possibility of Mink and British Blue combinations just to confuse me.

Actual Varieties: 2 x Russian Blue Agouti Essex, Russian Blue Agouti, British Blue Agouti Essex, British Blue, Black Essex, 2 x Agouti Essex, Russian Silver.

Number of Kittens: 3 girls and 6 boys

Pregnancy

19 days pregnant

21 days pregnant

16th of August, 2010 - 1 day old

The babies weighed 61 grams in total this morning, which makes them about 6.7 grams each. They all have nice milk bands and there seems to be 5 girls and 4 boys.

Photo of the babies from last night.

17th of August, 2010 - 2 days old

There's one little bub who isn't feeding as well as it should, but it's obviously getting something so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

18th of August, 2010 - 3 days old

We weighed the babies last night, very accurately thanks to my husband lending me the tiny scales from his workshop.
We have:

Boy, 8.1g
Boy, 9.6g
Girl, blaze, 7.2g
Boy, dark, 9.0g
Girl, spot, 8.5g
Boy, dark with spot, 9.1g
Girl, 5.5g
Girl, spot, 8.5g
Girl, 9.2g

Little Minnie still didn't look as if she'd fed properly last night, but this morning she had a lovely big milk band and weighed 5.8g.

20th of August, 2010 - 5 days old

Here we are, all nine are well although the little tiddler still isn't catching up. I'm no longer sure it's a girl, either. Six of the nine now have Essex markings.

21st of August, 2010 - 6 days old

This morning I had a look at the sexes again, and tried to guess the colours. I came up with 3 girls and 6 boys, which agrees with my Thursday attempt. I'll know for sure next Wednesday or Thursday when the girls' nipples start to show.

I think we have:

Blue Agouti/Cinnamon/Mink boy
Agouti boy
Agouti (almost blazed) Essex girl
Blue Essex girl
Blue Essex boy
Black Essex girl
Blue boy
Tiny cinn/mink Essex boy
Black Essex boy

25th of August, 2010 - 10 days old

Here we are at 10 days old. I'm giving up on naming colours at the moment, as my colour vision isn't up to the job.

Some new photos today.

Lea has moved the babies into her hammock.

Here's Lea looking beautiful

Babies in the hammock

And the nest now she's done a bit more work on it.

Some videos too

Lea nest building - I took most of it back out again later, because the tissue isn't very absorbent and isn't a very nice nest material when it gets damp.

The babies in the nest

I had thought that I had Russian Blue and Mink showing through, but it's now looking more like Russian Blue and British Blue, with the lighter coloured boy being Russian Silver Agouti rather than Russian Dove, and the blue self boy being British Blue. All I need to work out now is which Essex blues/blue agoutis are which blue.

29th of August, 2010 - 2 weeks old

14 days old - I think I've figured the colours.

The little boys have moved in with their daddy and uncles, and are getting along really wonderfully. There's not been a raised hair or a foof from the big boys, despite chewed ears, pulled tails, and babies falling off the ceiling of the intro cage onto rats below.
