Blythe's Litter, Week 4

22 Days Old - Sunday 8th February 2009

The babies are becoming more and more agile, and can reach every corner of the cage now. They keep erupting into little furry baby fights. I can see the beginnings of the moult out of their baby fur, and it's beginning to look as if the rexes might have a threadbare week or so until their coats come in, as they're beginning to get bare patches.

23 Days Old - Monday 9th February 2009

OK, I think this is where we're at, although it may still change.

  1. Cinnamon Essex rex boy - Tornion - keeping
  2. Cinnamon Essex rex boy - Kirk - Jim
  3. Cinnamon Essex rex boy - Gayle and family
  4. Agouti Essex rex boy - Gayle and family
  5. (Gingery) cinnamon rex boy - keeping
  6. (Minky) cinnamon rex boy - keeping
  7. Agouti rex boy - Spock - Jim
  8. Agouti boy - Gayle and family
  9. Agouti Essex rex girl - Anneliese
  10. Cinnamon Essex girl - Aura - keeping
  11. Agouti Essex girl - Anneliese
  12. Agouti Essex girl - Tom and Martha
  13. Agouti Essex girl - Kitinen - keeping
  14. Agouti girl - Tom and Martha

The babies are eating a lot more food so Blythe is at last getting some respite. They've discovered the hard mix as well as the soft food, and can use the drinking bottles - they have one with water in and one with puppy milk. Some of the rexes are getting very obvious bare patches. I think they may be going to have a bald week during their first moult.

24 Days Old - Tuesday 10th February 2009

I had the cage on the table again and let them all out to play. Kitinen managed to follow mum across the back of the chair onto the shelves, and I lost her for a while. An anxious 10 minutes or so. Thankfully when I did find her she was happy to climb back onto my hand to come home. I think she's going to be a handful.

I stuck a few chunks of mushroom in with their veg today and the babies seemed to like it a lot. Mind you, they're tasting everything they find at the moment.

25 Days Old - Wednesday 11th February 2009

Well I lost Kitinen again! I had them all out on the table, because height seems to contain them better than walls, but Kitty knew that the shelves were there because she'd been on them yesterday, and she had seen mum go that way, so she tried to jump across and ended up on the floor. She was very good and let me pick her up easily when she saw me, but had a good 5 minutes of freedom. She's starting to put me in mind of Thisbe, the rat who could open cage doors from inside and OUTSIDE and who started my desire to breed responsibly by having so many pregnancy scares and forcing me to research and prepare. I do miss her. Here's an example of Thisbe's antics:

These are the photos for today. I thought it might be easier to keep and eye on the babies without the cage on there. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, and Spock even found his way into the tree house.

Here are the babies playing on the table today, terminated abruptly by my realisation that Kitty had gone awol.

26 Days Old - Thursday 12th February 2009

We had a fairly unsuccessful playtime on the table, because all of the babies stayed in the treehouse. It began as a game with my daughter putting as many as she could in there, but they stopped coming out again. I think we'll leave the treehouse off the table for a while.

27 Days Old - Friday 13th February 2009

A little bit of a play on the table. The little rex girl is getting balder by the day, but you can feel that her adult coat is starting to grow. The babies are getting very big and active, so I'm going to move them into a bigger cage this weekend.

4 Weeks Old - Saturday 14th February 2009
