Ratty Corner

Caliadne's eye has gone down. She seems blind in that eye. There is an abscess remaining on top of her head, so was the whole thing an abscess, or was the abscess taking advantage of the infection? Still no further signs of infection.

I mated Grace and Sherbourne, thinking I'd given it 4 weeks as I'd been advised. Checking later it was only 3 weeks and it would have been my own stupid fault if anything had gone wrong. Mea culpa.

16th May 2009

Phoebe's face swelled up again, but this was definitely an abscess. No further signs, except for Bramble who is having his usual wheezy fits which respond to a ventolin inhaler.

I'm now completely unsure whether or not we had the SDA virus, or if it was a coincidental combination of abscesses and wheezies. Listening to other people and how hard it hit their rats I now doubt that we had it, and think I was panicking. But if we didn't have it how do I explain Pringle's eye? He wasn't in my abscessy cage. If we did have it why didn't it keep spreading? My decision was to treat it as if it was SDA anyway and to quarantine, but typically for my addled brain I spoilt that slightly by getting my maths wrong. Thankfully I didn't put anyone else at risk and it didn't come back to haunt me, but I'm still very upset at the thought that I could have put Grace and the babies at risk.
